What is F.A.R.M.Y market?

Fresh Agri-products Resourcing Market Youth

The F.A.R.M.Y market is a student-lead project, hosted on a small family farm. It aims to support young entrepreneurs and provide quality handcrafted goods to the public, through a five week, once a week market. Through the F.A.R.M.Y market, students can expect to gain hands-on education in finance, marketing, and salesmanship.

The F.A.R.M.Y market project was created when Whitney Drake, founder of the homeschool co-op The Coop, realized that youth entrepreneurship programs in the area didn’t really focus on agriculture. Hoping to create a youth farmers market focused specifically on homegrown products, she gathered a team of passionate students to begin brainstorming. Over the course of a few months, the founders decided that the market should include craft booths, in addition to agricultural businesses, to better support youth entrepreneurs. The founders also decided to hold the market on Holy Flock Farms. Through this setting, they hoped to draw more attention to agricultural career options, and promote awareness work that went into making the goods at the market.

Meet the F.A.R.M.Y founders

Liam

Hello, my name is Liam. I am fifteen years old and live and work on Holy Flock Farm. I have been around agriculture and gardening since I can remember. As a little kid I helped my parents in our small backyard garden in the suburbs (at the time we took pride in the size of our little garden). After years of planting fruit trees and gardening as much as we could in our neighborhood yard we moved to a thirteen and a half acre property and started Holy Flock Farm in 2020. I have learned and am still learning so much about regenerative agriculture and have a passion for sharing everything I have learned with anyone who wishes to listen (or not). I love creating art out of anything from playing and making guitars to building a log cabin on my property, I always love incorporating nature into my creations in any way I can. I am excited to be teaching at the education booth at the F.A.R.M.Y. Market.

Site and Guest lead

Avery

Hello, I am Avery. I am thirteen years old and I like to crochet and do crafts. I have two dogs who I love to play outside with. I also have a bunny and a cat. I love creating random stuff by making a sketch, or turning something into something else. I am one of the Founders of F.A.R.M.Y, and my role is Project Manager. I started my first business when I was six years old, selling bubble bombs for a few years. Then I started selling student planners last year. Now, I will be selling pet portraits at my booth at F.A.R.M.Y. I have spent lots of time on farms, lending a hand, taking tours, and playing with the animals.

Project Manager

Sam

Hello everyone! My name is Sam, and I’m one of the people working to launch the F.A.R.M.Y market. I’m currently in high school, and I hope to go into a career in agriculture, hopefully with my own farm. I love chickens, and I’ve incubated and hatched a clutch of 20 that now live on Holy Flock Farms. I’ll be co-running the education stand, Sprout and About, at the F.A.R.M.Y market, and I hope to see you there! If you haven't already - please consider signing up for the F.A.R.M.Y market!

Education Lead

Kit

Comunications lead

Hi! I’m Kit, the Communications Lead for the F.A.R.M.Y project. I chose to be on this project because it was so appealing to be a part of something where I could see my and other people’s dreams come true. As a video game and bracelet enthusiast I hope you stop by and pick up some of my themed bracelets. :)

Sophia

Finance Specialist

Hello! My name is Sophia. I am in highschool studying entomology with the dream to enter the zoology field. I’ve always loved bugs, especially Isopods and Rhinoceros Beetles. I enjoy sharing my interests and supporting others, which led me to volunteer with equine-assisted therapy for three years! I am very excited to be a part of F.A.R.M.Y and I can’t wait to see all the creations from everyone involved

Miss Whitney

Adult Supervision

F.A.R.M.Y is the brainchild of Miss Whitney, who generously lends her time to help the student F.A.R.M.Y leaders when professional advice is needed. She’s helped us with social media, organizing our meetings, and transportation, and definitely deserves a round of applause for her help.

Miss Liz

Holy Flock Farmer

Miss Liz is a farmer at Holy Flock Farms, a family owned regenerative farm in Travelers Rest. She has very kindly allowed the FARMY market to use her land to host the market, and continues to provide support and knowledge to the project. The F.A.R.M.Y market would not be possible without her guidance.

Vendor Resources

Are you looking for resources to help plan your market stand, or learn about becoming an entrepreneur? Here are a few we at the FARMY market would recommend.

F.A.R.M.Y young children business guide:

For young children, (pre-k - third grade) the FARMY team has created this one page worksheet.

FARMYmarketyoungchildrenmarketplantemplate

It uses simple terms, and covers products, services, and the time it takes to make the item, as well as what the item looks like.

BIZ KIDS business guide: https://www.purelansing.com/wp-content/uploads/bizkids-businessPlanTemplate-grades5to8.pdf

This guide, put up on google by BIZ KIDS and Lansing Economic Area Partnership, is great for kids in late elementary or middle school. It covers target audiences, finances, and start-up costs, but does not go into as much detail as guides aimed at older teens.

Upper middle school and high school:

For students looking to create a more advanced and professional portfolio or plan for their business, we like this guide: https://www.forbes.com/advisor/business/simple-business-plan-template/#get_your_free_simple_business_plan_template_section by Forbes.com. It goes into depth on the cost of creating each good, the overall goal of the business, creating an elevator pitch, marketing, target audiences, and more. The guide also includes a blog post explaining the template, which may allow deeper understanding.

A Change of Plans for our 10/5/24 Market

In response to the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, the FARMY team has decided to transform our October 5, 2024 market into a community service project to support North Carolina families impacted by the storm. On this date, our FARMY team will collect and pack donations of new or gently used baby and children’s items. These donations will be carefully delivered to families in need through a partnership with Trailside Church. (More information on the next page)

Our goal is to provide items that will help entertain children while they are stuck at home, bringing a sense of normalcy to their lives during this challenging time. This is an opportunity for our FARMY vendors, their parents, and anyone else interested in supporting this cause to join together in a spirit of "kids helping kids."

We encourage everyone to participate and make a difference! There will be free coffee, tea, and lemonade.
